The standard was published on March 12, 2018. This is a new international standard developed and published by ISO, and its release was long anticipated. ISO 45001:2018 shares a high-level structure (HLS), identical core text, and terms and definitions with other recently revised ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001:2015. Additionally, ISO 45001:2018 was designed to follow ISO 14001:2015 very closely, as organizations often combine their OH&S and environmental management systems internally. Therefore, those familiar with ISO 14001:2015 should be able to adopt ISO 45001:2018 with simplicity.
ISO 45001:2018 specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system, and gives guidance for its use, to enable organizations to provide safe and healthy workplaces by preventing work-related injury and ill health, as well as by proactively improving its OH&S performance. Ultimately, its aim is to promote and protect the physical and mental health of workers, a responsibility held by any organization.
ISO 45001:2018 is applicable to any organization that wishes to establish, implement and maintain an OH&S management system to improve occupational health and safety, eliminate hazards and minimize OH&S risks (including system deficiencies), take advantage of OH&S opportunities, and address OH&S management system nonconformities associated with its activities.
Consistent with the organization’s OH&S policy, the intended outcomes of an OH&S management system include:
a) achievement of OH&S Objectives and continual improvement of OH&S Performance
b) fulfilment of legal requirements and other requirements;
ISO 45001:2018 is applicable to any organization regardless of its size, type and activities. It is applicable to the OH&S risks under the organization’s control, taking into account factors such as the context in which the organization operates and the needs and expectations of its workers and other interested parties.
ISO 45001:2018 does not state specific criteria for OH&S performance, nor is it prescriptive about the design of an OH&S management system.
ISO 45001:2018 enables an organization, through its OH&S management system, to integrate other aspects of health and safety, such as worker wellness/wellbeing. It does not address issues such as product safety, property damage or environmental impacts, beyond the risks to workers and other relevant interested parties.
Benefits of ISO 45001:2018
- The organizations currently lacking an OH&S management system, the promotion of worker health and safety is far more than just a precaution
- An OH&S management system helps organizations limit these risks. Through the involvement of top leadership, clear communication, effective processes for identifying hazards, and the means for continual improvement, ISO 45001:2018 sets forth the guidance for an organization to improve its OH&S performance.
- With its usage, organizations can clearly identify their OH&S risks, evaluate and seek to improve performance, and encourage and assure that workers take an active role.
- The benefits for the employees are clear; they see improved workplace conditions and lessen their risk for injury or illness.
- Furthermore, this can better their reputation and advance a positive staff morale overall.
- Those adopting the system are also better equipped to meet legal and regulatory requirements.
- ISO 45001:2018 can easily be integrated into organizations with existing OH&S management systems. For those with other management systems in place, the OH&S management system set forth by ISO 45001:2018 can easily be integrated into the organization’s practices.
